If you are a company director, you must obtain a Director Identification Number.

From 1 November 2021, every director of a company in Australia must apply for a Director Identification Number (DIN).

What is a Director Identification Number?

Director Identification Numbers (DINs) are a unique identifier for company directors.

When do I need to get a DIN?

Directors appointed prior to 31 October 2021 have until 30 November 2022 to obtain their DIN.

Directors appointed between 1 November 2021 and 4 April 2022 will have 28 days from being appointed to obtain their DIN.

From 5 April 2022, having a DIN will be required before you can be appointed as a director.

Who needs a DIN?

A DIN is required before being appointed as a director of a company.  It will apply to all entities that are required to be registered under the Corporations Act.

Why do I need a DIN?

DINS are being introduced as part of a change to reduce illegal phoenix activity.  This is activity where directors of a company transfer an ongoing business and assets to another entity and then leave the old company to be liquidated and avoid its liabilities.  This activity costs the economy billions of dollars each year.

How do apply for a DIN?

The application will be made through the Australian Business Registry Services website from November 2021.

You must apply personally.  No one, including professional advisers, can apply on your behalf.

An online application can be made if you have a myGovID.  A myGovID is obtained through the myGovID app.  Applying for myGovID requires a smart device and an email address.

If you cannot get a myGovID, you can apply by telephone or a paper form.
